Cosatu challenges City to invite poor to free party in Cape Town on Sunday

11 December 2014

COSATU calls on the Mayor to invite the poor communities to the CCT party and to the switching-on of the lights. Such an event must also cater to the poor communities that often do not have money for transport to get to town. Imagine the joy for a poor child to come and see the City lights being switched on. The City excludes these poor communities in their plans for the party.

For small amount of R2000 the City can lay on trains for the poorest communities to join the celebration in Cape Town. This would be a small amount in relation to the hundreds of thousands of rand that the City spends on the White event organisers.

COSATU calls on the City to arrange free trains for the poor kids, who often do not even have a bread in the house, to be able to enjoy the event. This would be the most fitting gesture for the Christmas spirit. We know that the Mayor has forgotten her working class roots but we call on her to make an exception.
