NUMSA Statement Congratulating Cde Stefan Lofven for winning Swedish Elections

16 September 2014

On behalf of the more than 349 000 members National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa-NUMSA we take this opportunity to welcome the outcome of the Swedish Elections which has seen the Social Democratic Party of Sweden win the elections making Stefan Lofven elected Prime Minister designate after winning a tightly contested election of September 14th.

It is with pride and hope that NUMSA looks back to the rise of comrade Stefan to where it is today, from a factory worker to lead one of the most influential parties in the world.

During his tenure as a shop steward and leader of the metalworkers of Sweden, NUMSA developed strong relations with his union the IF Metall. Because of him we have a trusted ally in that part of the world.

Campaigning on a worker friendly platform and advancing progressive policies Stefan defeated incumbent Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt signaling the return of a left-leaning government after eight years in opposition. The shift reflected concerns among the Swedish workers in particular and electorate in general that Mr. Reinfeldt`s pro-market policies have chipped away at the country`s cherished welfare state.

With nearly all votes counted, results from Sweden`s election authority showed the Social Democrats won 31.1% of the vote, setting in motion the prospects for a left leaning coalition government.

Cde Stefan hasn`t confirmed which parties would make up his government but analysts consider a coalition between the Social Democrats and Green Party to be most likely, with the Left Party providing support in parliament.

Cde Stefan is an internationalist of note as indicated by his statement that “Because of our solidarity with people in other countries, and our awareness that many of today’s problems are global, Sweden cannot hide away in an international context. Sweden must take responsibility in the EU, in the UN and in other international bodies…”

NUMSA says congratulations Cde Prime Minister!
