COSATU calls for special rally to be held at Cape Town Stadium

6 December 2013

On behalf of the close to three hundred thousand COSATU members of the Western Cape we express our sincere condolences to the family, friends, the South African nation and people of the world at the expected but nonetheless, sad passing of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Tata Madiba, the true father of our nation, a freedom fighter and liberator will be remembered for his humility, courage, sacrifice and love for all.

His is the example and test that all politicians should be measured by.

At this time of passing we are sombre and saddened but at the same time determined to celebrate such a glorious life, to emulate the characteristics and to inculcate the values of our icon to ensure the lasting legacy he so richly deserves.

We believe that the greatest tribute we as a nation can make to such a sterling life - is for all of us, rich and poor to knuckle down and get to work to eradicate the remaining challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

COSATU further calls for a Special Rally to be held in Madiba`s honour, next Sunday, 15 December 2013, at Cape Town Stadium. Such a Rally should be led by Religious Leaders, with the logistics done by the City and Civil Society organisations. The City should provide transport for people to and from all areas in the Western Cape to attend this event in honour of the legacy of our hero and leader.
