COSATU PRESS STATEMENT

ISSUE - SADTU SOWETO BRANCH

COSATU notes with grave concern the behaviour of a few unruly elements during a SADTU General Members Meeting convened by the SADTU National Executive Committe (NEC) on Thursday 19 October 1995, to report back to members on the decision to restructure the Soweto Branch. These individuals denied the democratically elected leadership of SADTU to address their membership.

COSATU supports the decision made by the NEC to suspend the Branch Executive Committee of the Soweto Branch, since they are collectively responsible for the actions which led to the disruption of the meeting.

According to the labour movement's procedures, matters of this nature should be dealt with through the internal democratic structures which are accessible to all.

We believe that such behaviour is undemocratic and it goes against the grain of the democratic traditions of the labour movement. It is against this background that the federation condemns such behaviour.

COSATU urges the SADTU leadership to deal with this matter decisively and further set processes to investigate the root cause of such behaviour.
