COSATU condemns deadly attack by police

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is appalled at the death of a taxi driver in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, after he was assaulted and dragged behind a police van.

At first police officers claimed that he died after being attacked by other men in the police holding cells, but video footage taken by an eyewitness clearly shows him being tied to the back of the van and dragged along the street.

COSATU welcomes the investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and notes that the preliminary results of their post-mortem are consistent with the version that this man was dragged and possibly assaulted.

In the meantime the officers identified in the video footage, who are still working, must be immediately suspended.

It is outrageous that the police can be involved in such brutality and if those responsible are found guilty, they must be harshly punished. We cannot tolerate such conduct from the very people who are employed to protect our safety and security.
