COSATU NW and the farmersí attitude
20 February 2013
The Congress of South African Trade Union in the NW has learned with disappointment the reaction and attitude of farmers who are retrenching workers due to the sectoral determination amendment on wages.
It is reported to us that already farmers are retrenching workers around Lichtenburg and that farmers are employing cheap labour from outside the country and that they are targeting workers for retrenchment who are working monthly and employing workers for cheap weekly labour.
All that farmers are doing is undermining the laws of this country and the constitutional rights of those workers. It must be clear that is not retrenchment; is now unfair dismissal.
The racial attitude of farmers is now creating war against the working class in the province. Just to give one example: a famer in Zeerust employed 150 workers and he wants to retrench 140; clearly this is an attitude of a racist and apartheid attitude.
We are calling all farm workers who are retrenched unfairly or dismissed unfairly to report to unions or to the federation and Department of Labour.
We advise workers not to sign any documents with the farmer without consulting their unions or the federation.
Farm workers are also human beings, they also have the rights including to be protected.
All those farmers who are dismissing workers must be blacklisted and their products must be boycotted both in the country and international.
We are calling farm workers next week Saturday, 2March 2013, to join the mass action against the so-called retrenchment of the poor farm workers.
