Picket at the Bredasdorp Court – Rape and murder of teenager - Anene Booysen!

8 February 2013

COSATU is appalled and disgusted at the horrific rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Bredasdorp, Western Cape, on 3 February 2013. Anene Booysen was brutally and horrifically raped and mutilated and left for dead during the early hours of Saturday morning by a group of men. She managed to identify one of her alleged attackers before dying.

Taking Action:
Her identified killers will appear in the Bredasdorp court on 12 February 2013. In the Western Cape region, we are organizing a picket at the Bredasdorp Court from 09h00 to show our support to the family and community and to display our disgust at this cowardly act.

Let’s join hands in Bredasdorp on Tuesday!

COSATU also supports and joins in with the ANC-called Public march on Sunday 10 February 2013 at 15h00, to deliver a memorandum to the Bredasdorp Police Station, after a Memorial Service for Anene

  • A staff member at the hospital where she was treated told Die Burger that her injuries were “too horrific” to mention in any newspaper. "It was one of the harshest we`ve ever seen here at the hospital."

When a very similar incident occurred in India recently, there was a massive outbreak of protest and mass demonstrations in the streets; it was a big story around the world. We have to show the world that South Africans are no less angry at such crimes and make an equally loud statement of disgust, and protest in the streets. We need to unite as a nation to make criminals scared of society’s outrage when such acts are perpetrated.

With any questions, please call COSATU W Cape Provincial Secretary, Tony Ehrenreich, 082 7733194.
