COSATU NW marches to DairyBelle factory
15 January 2013
The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the North West will embark on a protest action to DairyBelle factory in Bloemhof.
This is part of the protest action to demand that the employer accedes to the workers’ demands for a wage increase and the employer has so far offered the workers and increase of about 6% to the lowest paid which is far below the inflation rate.
The workers at the factory have been on strike since November 2012 and the employer has not moved on the demands. What is worse is that the employer is threatening to withdraw the current benefits - transport, the 20% nightshift allowance and the 20 litres milk that workers have been receiving from the employer.
It is also reported that workers are working 7 days per week with no overtime. This is what we call super-exploitation of workers and the company has casuals who have worked for over four to seven years with poor conditions
COSATU has today addressed the workers through it provincial secretary and the workers are willing to go all out and march to the company
The march will take place as follows:
Date 16 January 2013.
Venue : start from Boitumelong township to the Dairy belle factory.
COSATU has also requested the CCMA to intervene on the dispute and the meeting between the CCMA the union and the company will be held on the 17 January 2013 at the CCMA office.
COSATU North West continues to support the farm workers in the Western Cape, as we believe that their demands are reasonable and want to advance the living wage for the farm workers and we are preparing our farm workers to take up full action by next week if the farmers are still using arrogance in the negotiation both in the WC and NW.
We call on all our members to support the farm workers’ demands and join the march tomorrow as we will be handing over the memorandum to the DairyBelle management.
We call on the police including the security company including our members to respect the picketing rules and that the police must arrest the security man who shot workers with live ammunition, including rubber bullets.
For more information feel free to call COSATU NW Provincial Secretary Solly Phetoe
