PRESS CONFERENCE ON CONDITIONS WITHIN THE TAXI INDUSTRY

7 October 1998

You are invited to a press conference at COSATU House (cnr Leyds & Biccard St, Braamfontein) on 8 October 1998, to discuss, amongst other issues, working conditions within the taxi industry. Many taxi drivers work up to 18 hours a day, 7 days a week for less than R1,000 a month.

The Department of Labour has instructed the Employment Conditions Commission to investigate the working conditions of these workers, who have been described as the country's "most vulnerable workers".

The Transport & General Workers' Union (T&GWU), who has recently launched the National Taxi Sector Council in its structures, together with COSATU will address this and other related issues at the press conference tomorrow.

The conference will be addressed by COSATU Vice President, Peter Malepe, T&GWU General Secretary, Randall Howard and T&GWU Taxi Coordinator, Maurice Bokaba.

For more information please contact Kim at COSATU (339 4911) or Maurice at T&GWU (331 9321).

Date: 8 October 1998 Time: 1pm Venue: COSATU House
