SAMWU welcomes launch of Coalition for a Free Palestine

27 September 2012

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) welcomes the launch of the Coalition for a Free Palestine (CfP) to take place tomorrow at COSATU House. This Union fully supports the Coalition and wishes it great success going forward.

It is about time we offer our assistance and solidarity to the oppressed people of Palestine, who are amongst the last remaining people who are experiencing apartheid – the kind of apartheid which many believe is worse than what we experienced in our dark days of apartheid.

This Union and many other COSATU Unions met with countless Palestinian visiting delegations over the years and all of them brought the same message; South Africa has successfully defeated apartheid, we want South Africa to now take the leading role with regards to solidarity and help liberate the people of Palestine.

SAMWU together with solidarity organisations, youth and student groups, trade unions, human rights organisations, faith based groups, artist collectives, and political parties have finally answered the countless calls made by fellow Palestinians.

SAMWU through the CfP will also begin to implement an important International resolution of the Union; to engage every single municipality to ensure that there are no commercial, academic, cultural, sporting or other linkages whatsoever with the Israeli regime.

We were inspired and humbled by the international solidarity that we received during our struggle against apartheid. We now want to repay this to the Palestinian people. The Palestinian struggle is a continuing part of our own revolutionary struggles.

For further comment, contact SAMWU’s General Secretary Walter Theledi on 082 558 6580.
