COSATU urges strikers to avoid violence
27 September 2012
The Congress of South African Trade Unions reaffirms its full support for the striking members of the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU), and other unions in the transport and logistics industry.
COSATU calls upon the employers to return as soon as possible to the negotiation table with an improved offer, failing which the federation will continue to give support and solidarity to the strikers.
There is widespread sympathy for the drivers, who work long and unsocial hours to keep the country’s economic arteries moving. It is important to sustain and broaden that support. However, scenes of violence on TV undermine public support for the strikers’ cause.
The federation therefore joins SATAWU in appealing to the workers on strike to avoid any resort to violence, even when provoked, and to implement COSATU’s long-standing policy of protesting in a peaceful, lawful and disciplined manner.
