DEATH CHIEF MOSHOOD ABIOLA
COSATU received with shock the news of the death of Chief Moshood Abiola, the duly elected representative of the Nigerian People. According to the news his death was caused by a heart attack. We have concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death. COSATU thinks that it would be in the interest of the people of Nigeria and the international community for an international commission of inquiry to be set up to resolve this issue.
We note the steps that Abubakar has taken in releasing a few political prisoners, but we also note the fact that there are about 7000 political activists still in jail.
COSATU calls on Abubakar to speedily create a free political climate in Nigeria. This will mean the immediate unbanning of opposition parties and release of political prisoners. We re-iterate our call for the immediate installation of an interim governing structure that will facilitate the eventual holding of democratic elections.
We believe this is an opportune moment for the military junta to pronounce a programme for installation of democracy in Nigeria in a fitting tribute to Chief Abiola. This will be a meaningful tribute to the son of this soil, who spent the last few precious years of his life rotting in jail for calling for democratic reforms.
