COSATU statement on public service agreement

8 August 2012

COSATU congratulates the public service unions in general and the eight COSATU public service unions (SADTU, NEHAWU, POPCRU, DENOSA, PAWUSA, SAMA, SASAWU and SADNU) represented by SADTU, NEHAWU, POPCRU and DENOSA in the PSCBC for concluding their public service wage negotiations on 31 July 2012.

The agreement was signed by all the public service unions including all COSATU affiliated public service unions and therefore it enjoyed a 100% majority.

This shows that all the unions were united as ever, contrary to what some sections of the media has suggested over the weekend. Amongst others matters agreed upon, this agreement includes a 7% salary increase back-dated from 1st May 2012 for 2012/13, projected CPI plus 1% for 2013/14 and 2014/15 and housing allowance increase from R800 to R900.

We are however worried that the negotiations took six months to conclude and therefore this agreement is going to be implemented almost four months after the initially envisaged implementation date of 1st April 2012 as per last year’s agreement. We hope that the next round of negotiations will be finalised as speedy as possible.

We call upon both the public service unions and the government to work together and refocus their energies in quality service delivery and improvement of the lives of the working class and the poor.
