Strike begins at Forskor
27 July 2012
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has last night began a strike at Forskor mine in Phalaborwa, Limpopo. The strike comes after protracted negotiations on medical aid, long service benefits and provident fund amongst others collapsed.
The matter was referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) early in the year and the NUM was awarded a certificate of non-resolution to the dispute which allowed it to go on strike on the 16th April 2012. “We have tried our level best to engage this company.
Even when we received a certificate to strike in April, we decided not to strike but continued to engage the company. We are convinced the company thought that was a weakness and we have decided to bring them to our level through a massive strike action” says William Mabapa, the NUM ‘s Regional Secretary in the North East region.
“We demand disability benefits, Sunday payments to shift supervisors, separation of workshops and others” says Mabapa.
Forskor is a phosphate mine based in Phalaborwa, Limpopo and is owned by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). A total of 1100 workers is involved in the strike action.
