COSATU and SACP send best wishes to ANC Policy Conference

22 June 2012

The Congress of South African Trade Unions and the South African Communist Party held a bilateral meeting this morning, 22 June 2012, to discuss a common approach to next week’s crucial National Policy Conference of its ally, the African National Congress.

The two organisations sent their best wishes to the ANC for a successful Conference in this, its centenary year. They expressed the strong hope that the delegates would focus their attention on the political challenges identified in the Discussion Papers and not be sidetracked into premature and potentially divisive leadership contests.

Our revolution is at a crossroads. Poverty hunger, unemployment and want confront our people daily. The moment is for us to focus on addressing the key challenges facing our people.

It is vital that the leader of the alliance, the ANC, emerges from this year’s two conferences stronger and more united, to lead society around a programme for economic and social transformation.

In particular the SACP and COSATU stress the importance of confronting the triple crisis of unemployment, poverty and inequality in a systematic way, and adopting a strong, coherent developmental strategy to restructure our economy, expand manufacturing industry and create sustainable and decent jobs.

The Alliance partners, and the broader mass democratic movement, have a vital role to play in making sure that our national democratic revolution stays on track and accelerates, so that we can start to see the vision of the founding comrades of 1912, and the authors of the Freedom Charter, becoming a living reality for the people of South Africa.
