Killing of a young person in Kuruman for being gay

12 June 2012

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the Northern Cape has learned with shock and sadness about the killing of a young person in Kuruman for being gay.

We join LEGBO Northern Cape and Northern Cape NGO Coalition in condemning this brutal attack on a young, brilliant and educated soul whose head was chopped off in a hate crime.

Our deepest and sincere condolences go to his family and the community of Kuruman for this monstrous behaviour. We call on the SAPS in Kuruman to ensure that the police do not rest until the perpetrators are brought to book.

As COSATU we condemn any behaviour that seeks to prejudice people on the basis of their sexual orientation and beliefs. We respect the rights of all individuals as enshrined in the constitution of our country and life is a principle right.

This matter will be thoroughly discussed in our PEC meeting on Thursday/Friday, 14-15 June 2011 and we will emerge with a clear programme to identify and isolate such monsters from our society.

Our sincere call goes to the provincial government to convene a summit as a matter of urgency to discuss not only this matter, but the increasing levels of domestic violence.

For more information please contact the COSATU N Cape Provincial Secretary, Anele Gxoyiya @ 082 829 1961
