ARREST OF COSATU MEMBERS IN CAPE TOWN

20 November 1997

COSATU condemns in strongest terms the arrest of about 39 of its members outside Parliament in Cape Town this morning. Among the workers arrested are the COSATU Regional Educator and NUMSA Regional Secretary.

The workers were demonstrating peacefully to voice their opposition to Indonesia's continued occupation of East Timor and abuse of human and Trade Union's rights. The protest was also in support of President Mandela's efforts to work towards a peaceful resolution of the problem. The demonstration coincides with Indonesian President Suharto's visit to South Africa.

It is barbaric that the police still see fit to deny people their constitutional right to peaceful protest. Their arrest is irrational and uncalled for. COSATU demands the immediate release of those comrades and the withdrawal of all charges.
