PASSING OF THE CONTROVESIAL MEDICINE BILL

October 22, 1997

COSATU welcomes and supports the move taken by parliament yesterday to pass the medicine bill that has been labeled as controversial by pharmaceutical companies. The bill is a genuine attempt to make health care accessible to all South Africans at affordable prices.

COSATU is concerned about the continuous destructive criticisms and threats aimed at the Minister of Health from both the United State pharmaceutical investors and people within our country.

These companies have no interest in the welfare of South Africans, especially the rural people who desperately need the law to protect them against these profit mongers who want to hold our health system at ransom.

COSATU supports the Minister of Health on the need to establish a National Health Insurance. We shall engage with the government to ensure that what is introduced does not merely become taxation on working people to finance state provision of hospital care but a genuine attempt to make health care accessible. Our aim is to replace the current system of medical aid schemes with the National Health Insurance.
