COSATU Northern Cape welcomes return of government garage to Provincial government

13 December 2011

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the Northern Cape welcomes the return of the government garage and fleet management back into the hands of the Provincial government. There can be no better Christmas present for the people of the Northern Cape than this progressive decision by our provincial government.

We are of the view that this decision is long overdue and the delay thereof has already cost the provincial government money. However we are confident that, with the right mindset and the employment of the correct skills in fleet management, our provincial government will go a long way in saving money for the intensification of service delivery to the people of our province.

This decision marks a positive step towards doing away with outsourcing and privatisation of government services. It is also a move that will make a contribution to the creation of decent work in our provincial government.

We call on all the workers who will be entrusted with the responsibility to use these cars in serving our people to use them responsibly. They should not be used for personal reasons but to render services to the poor and needy people of our province.

We call on the provincial government to put in place mechanisms for the use of these vehicles and take strict action against anyone found to be abusing this precious asset of our government. Government fleet needs efficient management and monitoring for it to be cost-effective.

We appeal to the members of the public to be on the lookout for the incidents of abuse and report such actions for it is in their own interests that these cars are taken good care of
