Racism is still rife in South Africa

25 November 2011

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the North West have for some time spoken about racism and the refusal of white South Africans to transform and accept and respect the new democratic order which was installed in South Africa in 1994.

The incident in Ventersdorp where an AWB flag was hoisted instead of the SA flag is a clear confirmation of what we have been saying.

Whites in South Africa, in particular those who are members of the AWB and other reactionary rightwing organisations, have not accepted and will not accept the transformation which the ANC government is trying to bring about unless something serous is done by the government.

COSATU has over time called for the removal of private security companies from public institutions and this call has been ignored. In our view the incident at the Ventersdorp hospital shows clearly where the loyalty of the security company is.

COSATU is also disappointed by the response of the management in the hospital. This shows that the management there is not hands-on and does not know what is happening in the hospital yard. Many times our members have been attacked at the hospitals and clinics and until today no progress has been registered in the investigation of those cases.

COSATU calls on the state to investigate this matter and criminally prosecute those who are involved in this matter. We are also calling for the suspension of the CEO and the removal of the security company for the safety of our members and the public.
