CWU Statement on court ruling relating to the Distortion of News and Blacklisting of Critical Analysts 26 January 2011 The news relating to the judgment handed down by Judge CJ Claasen, at the North Gauteng Court, regarding the manipulation of News and Current Affairs programming by former SABC Head of News and Current Affairs, Dr. Snuki Zikalala, has filled Communication Workers Union (CWU) with disgust. The judgement confirms the long standing view that was held by ourselves, our federation (Cosatu), the vanguard of the working class (the SACP) and other concerned civil society formations that for a long time the public broadcaster was used as a weapon to fight factional political battles by the faction that was defeated in Polokwane. These led to us referring to the phenomenon as the Snukification of the SABC. CWU views this judgment by Judge CJ Claasen as a wakeup call to all South Africans. We must ensure that the SABC becomes an independent broadcaster that serves the interests of the working class, the poorest of the poor and the South Africans in general. Any attempts to take back the SABC to the Snuki era must be defeated. We call upon the civil society organizations to continue to play an oversight role on the SABC (and other SoE’s) as this responsibility cannot be left to Parliament alone. Issued by CWU Matankana Mothapo
