COSATU North West message of condolence to family of girl burned to death in tin house in Maquasi Hills

7 December 2010

The Congress of South African Trade Unions, with the Mayor of Maquasi Hills visited the family of a six year old girl who was burned to death in a tin house last night due to a candle accident.

The mother of four children, who stays in a small tin house or a shack, lost her girl who died last night at Maquasi Hill local township between 22h00 and 23h00. At the time of the incident six people were inside the house. The other five managed to escape but the poor six years old girl was not able to run. She lost her life right at the spot and her old grandmother is badly burned and in a bad condition at Maquasi Hills hospital.

COSATU has requested the municipality and the MEC of Human Settlement to intervene with a temporary structure and we also demand that Department of Social Development take responsibility for counseling and the funeral costs.

As COSATU we are happy that our local municipality and the provincial government responded positively to the tragedy that took the life of an innocent poor baby girl.

Let her soul rest in peace and we wish her grand-mother a speedy recovery at the hospital.

For more information feel free to call COSATU NW provincial secretary on 082 304 4055
