        A constitutional amendment was adopted at Congress, redesignating this position to that of Deputy General Secretary.

      • An election for First Vice president was held. Voting was as follows:

        Connie September: 1 321 votes

        Spoilt papers: 14

        Connie September was therefore declared elected as First Vice President.

        The nomination of Connie September fell away due to her election as First Vice President.

        Peter Malepe was therefore declared elected as Second Vice President.

Notes:

  • EISA had to make several calls to the affiliates who had not sent in their nomination forms by midnight of 31 September 1997. In view of the short notice and that many of the General Secretaries were not in the office when the forms were sent, nomination forms were accepted up until 5:00 p m Wednesday, 3 September 1997.
  • Despite several calls to the General Secretaries of SASBO and SAPSA, no nominations were received from them, and nominations were closed.
  • The election for First Vice President was conducted by secret ballot against a register of official delegates to Congress.
