Congress | Declarations
Declaration on ERPM and HARTIES
Adopted by COSATU Special Congress, 20 August 1999
The liquidation of ERPM, despite a workable proposal by the NUM because of the R 7,5 m shortfall when the liquidator will be paid R 16 m, is a clear indication that the Insolvency Act needs to be amended and tightened urgently.
The job creation trust is called upon to assess if it can`t intervene as this is a labour intensive project and has serious socio-economic implications for the country, particularly Gauteng, East Rand, Boksburg and labour-sending regions.
The mass dismissal at Harties Gold Mine is condemned in the strongest terms and will be challenged. Durban Roodepoort Deep Group should be compelled to engage the NUM in an effort to get a solution.
This offensive on Mineworkers is an offensive on the working people of South Africa. The congress restates its commitment to solidarity with workers who are under attack.
The campaign to save jobs and save the mining industry is part of a broader campaign to save jobs and create new jobs.
