COSATU and Trevor Manuel

27-11-08

The Congress of South African Trade Unions wishes to correct a story which appeared in The Times on 28 November 2008 under the headlines: "COSATU: `We want Manuel gone`" and "Federation calls for new minister after elections".

As the article below these headlines makes clear, the COSATU President, Sdumo Dlamini, did not make any such statement, but said that the federation "will respect the ANC`s decision" on who is on their list of parliamentary candidates, and the decision of the incoming President of South Africa on who should serve as ministers in his government.

COSATU supports the policies contained in the resolutions of the ANC`s Polokwane National Conference, and expects whoever is appointed as Minister of Finance in the new government to implement the mandate from Polokwane. The federation has consistently cri ticised many of the economic policies of Finance Minister, Trevor Manuel, and would not be happy if they were to be continued.

That however can in no way be interpreted as a demand that he should be removed from office. If he is the ANC`s choice COSATU will respect that and look forward to whoever hold that position taking forward the Polokwane agenda.
