COSATU KwaZulu Statement on the Selection of the uMgeni Board Members

10 April 2019

COSATU is concerned about the politicisation and coru of uMgeni utility by and we view this as a source of instability in the utility.

In 2017,the former Minister of Water & Sanitation made a call for nominations to the Board of the uMgeni Water through an advert, closing on 17 October 2017.On the eve of the appointments, the process was aborted owing to the appointment of the new Minister in February 2018.

On July 2018 again the process was reinitiated and abandoned again for quite some time with no explanation.

However, beginning of this week as COSATU ,we have learnt that the interviews were eventually being conducted on Monday and Tuesday. The question of how the selection process of the candidates was done is not being answered.

We view this as negligence from the side of the Minister and as a potential source of instability.

Previously,COSATU KZN has written to the Minister calling for an urgent meeting to engage on the above concerns but in vain. It is unfortunate that the Minister was prepared to be engaged by other stakeholders but not COSATU.

COSATU demands an explanation from the Minister as to how such a discrepancy is allowed to happen. We further demand the Minister to suspend the appointments pending thorough engagements on the matter.

We further call on the State President to intervene in ensuring ethical conduct by the elected public representatives in doing their work and protect State Owned Entities for our poor people.

If the Minister continues to disregard the voice of workers,we shall be prepared to hold the bull by its horns in defence of our rights and the utility. Umngeni remains the hope of the poor people of the province of access to clean and quality water. We shall mobilize our structures through a Programme of Action which will consider all avenues and means to have our voice respected.
