COSATU North West Statement on the tragic death of three children at Gemsbok Farm near Tigane

8 September 2017

COSATU in the North West Province is saddened by the tragic death of three children from the Chowe family, who were burned to death in a house at Gemsbok farm near Tigane. These children were learners at Phakela school.

This is the second incident wherein children died after being burned inside the house due to lack of electricity.

The incident of the three children happened after the mud house caught fire, while they were sleeping after the paraffin container allegedly exploded. COSATU calls upon farmers and all government stakeholders to monitor conditions in which our people live.

It is sad that the children could not manage to escape because of the condition of the mud house.Cosatu visited the Chowe family and attended the memorial service today at Phakela School.

We have requested the Department of Labour, SAHRC and police to investigate the matter ,and we will continuously interact with the family to assist them as they deal with their bereavement.

Cosatu wishes the family comfort in this difficult time of bereavement.
