COSATU welcomes the sentencing of Cde Mbuyiselwa Phajana Mnguni's killers to two life sentences

The Congress of South African Trade Unions welcomes the sentencing of the killers of Cde Mbuyiselwa Samuel "Phajana" Mnguni the former Cosatu Sasolburg Local Secretary and Ceppwawu Regional Secretary in the Free State to two life sentences. Cde Mnguni was attacked and killed in 2014. Michael Bheki Mthethwa and Jonannes Motloung were sentenced to two life sentences on two counts of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances by the High Court in Sasolburg today.

The federation is happy that justice has been served and we hope that the family of Cde Mnguni will find some peace and closure following the sentencing of the two. We commend Warrant Officer Hendricks, W/O Pitso and Constable Kgaudi for their sterling work in investigating this case and seeing that justice is done at the end of the day.

While there are legitimate complaints about police officers not responding when called or not honestly doing their jobs; there are thousands of hardworking man and women who are working hard every day to protect the public and keep law and order.

COSATU is concerned by the culture of unnecessary violence in the country and we urge our law enforcement agencies to arrest this situation as soon as possible.
