Cosatu Western Cape condemns train disruptions

COSATU is appalled at the disruption on the trains system during peak hours today, Monday 28 November 2016. These disruptions on the train services have become a regular occurrence. The Metro Rail must take some responsibility for not managing the service more effectively.

COSATU can understand that some of the problems are caused by criminality and cable theft, but most insist that more proactive steps are taken by Metro Rail. The federation calls on the police and Metro rail to work together more effectively to combat the scourge. We also call on communities to report any criminality that comes to their attention.

The train services are an essential element of the public transport of poor people and workers and must be guarded carefully. The workers who are losing money because Metro rail cannot keep the train's running must be refunded for the money that they lost and the money spent on alternative transport.

The public transport system has had similar problems in the past, but has never been allowed to escalate to these levels in the past. The federation calls on urgent action to restore the effective running of the trains
