COSATU shocked at lion killing

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is shocked at the killing of another farm worker by lions in the North West province. David Molwane, who worked at a lion breeding farm at Setlagole, was mauled to death by six lions when he took water into their enclosure on Tuesday 27 May. Only his intestines and fingers were left.

We send our condolences to his family and friends.

COSATU demands a full investigation into this tragic incident, and that charges be brought against anyone found to have been guilty of negligence.

The federation has already written to the NW MEC for Agriculture to request a meeting to discuss the protection of workers from attacks by animals, but with no response. We now therefore call again on the Premier and the MEC to meet us urgently to discuss measures to ensure that no more such tragedies occur.

For further information please phone the COSATU NW Provincial Secretary, Solly Phetoe, on 082 304 4055
