COSATU W CAPE PRESS STATEMENT ON BUS STRIKE
19th May 2008
COSATU condemns the action of the golden Arrow bus company in not providing busses to communities to whom they are paid millions of rand a year to provide this service. The Golden Arrow Bus Company has provoked a strike at the company and is refusing to negotiate with the COSATU to resolve the strike, as it appears to be there intention to dismiss the workers. The COSATU union has recently become the majority union at the plant and now the company has to negotiate with us. This is the same old style management that was part of the company when they defrauded government of millions of rand and they got away with an out of court settlement.
COSATU will oppose the use of Golden Arrow tickets on the trains as the trains are already overcrowded and further numbers of people on the trains endangers the lives of all. The strike must be settled as a matter of urgency and the government who funds the millions of rand to Golden Arrow on behalf of our people must compel Golden Arrow to speak to the union and settle this strike.
COSATU remains available to assist to settle this dispute and condemns the attitude of the golden Arrow management who are endangering the lives of commuters through there union busting attitude.
