SABC Board must go, says COSATU
The Congress of South African Trade Unions welcomes the ruling by Johannesburg High Court Judge, Moroa Tsoka, to set aside SABC CEO Dali Mpofu's suspension.
He not only criticised the way in which the chairperson of the board handled the matter, but ruled that "the meeting at which the decision was taken to suspend Mpofu was unlawful". This means that no decisions taken at that meeting were lawful.
COSATU agrees with the view of the ANC Parliamentary study group in the Communications Committee that the court's decision to reinstate Mpofu "gives more grounds for a vote of no confidence in the SABC Board" and we urge the Committee to proceed with their vote. We repeat the demand that the Board must resign immediately and be replaced by a Board that truly reflects the broad spectrum of South African society, including the important labour constituency.
