ZCTU PRESS RELEASE

SUBJECT: Raymond Majongwe picked-up by the police

Raymond Majongwe, the general secretary of the Progressive Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has been picked-up by the police. Majongwe was picked-up at the High Court of Zimbabwe where he was attending a case in which the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) President, Lovemore Matombo and Secretary General Wellington Chibebe are being accused of inciting the people to rise against the government and communicating falsehoods during their May Day celebrations on May 1, 2008.

We are not sure on what charges he is being accused of, but suspect that he is to be questioned on press adverts he placed in papers of teachers who are being beaten and harassed at their workplaces during the current wave of political violence.
