WC Jobs and Poverty Protest 08-05-08 |
COSATU W CAPE PRESS STATEMENT - SUNDAY PROTEST AT THE PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE 11 MAY FROM 16 00 TO 18 00
COSATU and a number of organisations linked to the Jobs and Poverty Coalition around rising food prices will be holding a protest at the provincial legislature in Wale street on Sunday 11th May 2008 between 16h00 and 18h00 with the handing over of a memorandum at 18h 00 hours to the Office of the Premier.
The price of bread is touching R10 in the townships and fuel is also at R10 at the pump, this all is leading to inflationary pressures across the economy that is having a devastating effect on poor working families.
AS COSATU WE DEMAND THE FOLLOWING:
Urgent support for new and established farmers to plant more food stuff to ensure food security
The immediate banning of the practice of charging import parity prices on locally produced food
The nationalisation of Sasol and the charging for Sasol fuel at the cost it takes to produce it.
The immediate removal of the exorbitant taxes on fuel and the passing on of these taxes to the wealthy elite.
The extension of subsidised transport into the new areas to assist workers who are fleeced by taxi cost
The incarceration of directors whose companies are responsible for colluding around food prices.
The convening of a food summit to agree on ways to address the crisis
These along with the demands that we have raised previously would be pursued in action to induce the government at a variety of levels to respond more urgently to the plight of the working class who bears the brunt of these high prices.
