PRESS RELEASE
BOYCOTT SPIF CHICKENS
The Congress of South African Trade Unions in Limpopo is calling on people to stop buying chickens and any products of SPIF. Workers at the chicken factory which is situated in Mookgophong, Limpopo, have been out on strike for the past six weeks demanding improved working conditions. These include a minimum wage of R1 200.00 per month, a 13.5% across the board increase and a guaranteed annual bonus. Negotiations have been stalled due to bad faith bargaining on the part of the employer, despite the preparedness of the union FAWU to make concessions.
The attitude of the employer towards the workers is quite unacceptable; hence our call for a boycott of SPIF Chickens. COSATU together with its all other affiliates and Alliance partners will stage a protest action on Monday, 30 June 2008 in Mookgophong in solidarity with the striking workers.
