THE REPLACEMENT OF THE PREMIER

23rd July 2008

Cosatu would like to thank the premier for the service to the people of the W Cape during his tenure. We remember especially his contribution to the clothing sector and the steps to assist the revival of the industry. These steps had contributed to job creation in this sector. We also remember his role in the UDF and liberation struggle where he distinguished himself as a committed son of the soil.

The divisions in the W Cape were unfortunate and had both paralysed the ANC and the Government in service delivery, and for this the leadership has to be held to account. The ANC National decision to replace the premier is an important step in the direction to get the organization back on track. The measures do however have to be respectful and be seen to be even handed. It is in this respect that Com Rasool should be redeployed elsewhere in government and not just discarded, as he has many talents and experiences that is needed.

We believe that the ANC is bigger than any individual and workers will support the ANC irrespective of who the Premier and leader is, as is the role of every committed comrade. The most important issue is to develop a team spirit that unites our people around the program of the ANC to win the election and use government to speed up delivery.
