MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ACTING
NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF THE S A POLICE SERVICE
Pretoria 2008-07-17
(E-mail warning of “massive strike” and violence on 23 July 2008 a hoax)
An e-mail is presently being widely circulated claiming that there will be a “massive strike” on Wednesday 23 July 2008 and warning people that they should not go to town on that day as the strike will be of a violent nature.
The South African Police Service would like to clearly state that this e-mail is a hoax and urge recipients to delete it and not to perpetuate this urban myth.
This office held discussions with a spokesperson from COSATU, which is presently embarking on a democratic process of peaceful mass action which will culminate on 6 August 2008, and they too have confirmed that this e-mail message is completely false.
The South African Police Service has vast experience in monitoring mass action and crowd management and would like to reassure all members of the community that there is no need to be alarmed and to disregard this and similar e-mail / SMS campaigns.
Ends.
