COSATU W CAPE PRESS STATEMENT ON STRIKE ACTION OF THE 23RD JULY 2008

16TH JULY 2008

COSATU Western Cape is aware of an email doing the rounds suggesting that the Western Cape will be on strike on Wednesday 23rd July 2008. This email goes as far as threatening violence against those who may defy this strike action. The facts are the following:

The COSATU rolling mass action consist of the following elements:
Provincial strike action -9th July 2008 –Western Cape and KZN

16TH July 2008 – Mpumalanga, Free State and Northern Cape

23rd July 2008 – Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and North West

6th August 2008 – National strike –all provinces.

COSATU does not condone violence or intimidatory tactics to coerce people to our action. We believe in our cause and given our support see no reason for such tactics in any case,

We trust the above is sufficient to dispense with any confusion and clarifies our position. Full details of the action planned for 23 July will be issued to the media on 17 July.
