ZCTU Press Statement
SUBJECT: Effort to revive ZCTU Forex case fails, as court hearing fails to take off
Efforts by the government to revive an old case in which the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is being accused by the state of contravening foreign currency regulations that was supposed to be heard today, 7 July 2008, failed to take off at Harare magistrate court after records of the case were not located.
Last month the State revived an old case of 2002 in which it claimed ZCTU flouted foreign currency transaction and had wanted to appear in court today to face the charges, but the proceeding did not take place. Initially, the ZCTU was told that the Public prosecutor was absent, only to be told later that there were no cord records. The ZCTU is being represented by Comrade George Nkiwane, ZCTU 2nd Vice President who is also the chairman of ZCTU Finance and Administration Committee.
The case came before the courts in 2006 after government appointed an investigator into the finances of the ZCTU. The case was dismissed by the court and the revival of the case is seen in the labour circles as continuous harassment of the ZCTU by the government.
The State had last month indicated that the trial would run from 7 – 14 July 2008 and the ZCTU waits their next move.
