COSATU W CAPE PRESS STATEMENT ON THE STRIKE FOR THE 9th JULY 2008

Cosatu today confirmed at a press statement that the strike will go ahead come rain or shine on the 9th July 2008. The strike and protest was supported by the following organisations who attended the press conference. The religious organisations, the civil society organisations, the ANC and a number of other organisations, have all pledged there support to the strike as well as there participation.

The protest is against the increases of the prices of electricity and the instability of supply, due to the crisis in Eskom.

The electricity crisis is leading to rising prices and the threat to job losses as a result of unstable supply, through company closures, as a result of them loosing orders through being unable to meet the deadline.

The context of the strike is however also the rising food prices and the rising oil prices, that have contributed to the high prices and declining standards of living of communities and the poor. The interest rates also have a devastating effect on the pricing and economic stagnation and decline.

This strike is directed at government policy [GEAR] that led to this increases and the way for them to resolve it is to demonstrate the political will to change these policies of the Mbeki administration. The strike is also directed at Eskom and the Business sector that are responsible for the conclusion and robbery in all the sectors in the economy. The corruption of businesses has been shown and proven in the collusion in the bread prices, the milk prices, the chicken prices and the banking charges.

Cosatu has arranged free trains to transport for all people to and from the protest free of charge.
