COSATU Limpopo press release
The Congress of South African Trade Unions in Limpopo have today called for the Province’s Director General to intervene in the process of integrating workers in the tribal authorities into the Public Service. This comes as a result of the replacement of the current staff with completely new people despite an earlier commitment that no one will be rendered redundant through this process. COSATU views the government’s action as acting in bad faith and a betrayal of trust given their previous undertakings in this regard.
COSATU and NEHAWU have been engaging with the Provincial Government on this matter since last year. Failure by the government to correct this situation will leave the federation with no option but to declare a dispute and file a Section 77 notice which will lead to a series of actions including a possible provincial strike action.
We have always held the view that these workers must all be absorbed into the public service except those who have reached pensionable age. Those who do not qualify in the current positions that they occupy must either be given further training or redeployed into suitable positions within the public service.
