Cosatu Eastern Cape Press Release

25-02-08

The Congress of South African Trade Unions Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee met over the weekend to discuss amongst other matters related to the state of the province and the challenges facing the organization and the broader society.

The PEC noted with concern, the escalating food prices, which are further exacerbated by the price fixing exercise in particular Tiger Brands. The PEC welcomed the competition commission's expose and resolved to deepen Cosatu's campaign against the VAT on basic food stuffs.

Cosatu is of the view that the sharp increase in food prices is dealing a blow to household food security.

The PEC further noted the deteriorating public health system in the province, and the limitations of the service transformation plan in addressing these matters, and as such the PEC resolved to deepen its campaign against the service transformation plan.

The PEC resolved to support Samwu's programme of action against the municipalities in general and Salga in particular for their sustained attack on Trade Union leaders.

The PEC further resolved to demonstrate and picket at the gates of the Eastern Cape Legislature on the 29th February 2008. The demonstrations will co-incide with the MEC for Finance's budget speech. The decision to demonstrate is a result of underspending of allocated budgets by government departments which undermines service delivery.
