Blyvoor (Durban Roodepoort Deep) Mine: intolerant racist behaviour
Blyvoor mine management continues to practice racism towards its employees. The NUM (National Union of Mineworkers) is at loggerhead with management, trying to rescue members from this unbecoming behaviour that is practiced daily.
It has been a practise in this mine that senior and middle management positions are reserved for white people even if they do not have sufficient qualifications. Management is bluntly refusing to implement the Employment Equity Act. As a result of frustration from this black workers with qualifications opt to resign.
White bosses continue to physically assault black mineworkers and get away with it, with no disciplinary action taken against them. Last week Wednesday an NUM leader has been verbally and physically abused by a white racist boss, requesting a postponement of the case of a member.
"We are sick and tired of this kind of a behaviour that is displayed by these racist elements within this company. All these incidents are reported to the Human Resource manager who is also white and seen to be very much instrumental in these incidents. This kind of behaviour cannot be tolerated anymore. We are therefore going to mobilise our members to fight against this monster." Deon Boqwana NUM Carletonville Regional Chairperson.
