COSATU W CAPE PRESS RELEASE ON THE JOBS AND POVERTY CAMPAIGN

FOOD PRICE MASS PROTEST AT PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE AT 19H30 -THURSDAY 24TH APRIL 2008

24th APRIL 2008

COSATU invites all citizens to join the protest at the Provincial Legislature from 19h30 on Thursday 24th April 2008

Cosatu is outraged at the high prices of food and electricity that are being imposed on poor communities by the government and big business. Cosatu along with 30 other organisations will be holding a picket at the Provincial Parliament Wale street on Thursday 24th April 2008 at 19 30 with a press conference at 20h 00 hours.

The Provincial Government appears to be in denial about the crisis as they have not responded to the plight of people at all in respect of the rising prices. We insist that the Provincial Government convenes an urgent food summit to discuss the crisis and ways in which to address it. This summit should include the whole of the society and all the sectors of business. We will be rolling out the programme of action In conjunction with the churches and other sectors of society as we believe there are a number of ways in which the food prices can be urgently reduced immediately. The Premier has been invited to collect the memorandum. Their will be a press briefing at 20h00 at the Wale Street legislature steps.
