Cosatu statement on the Sale of Somerset land 23-04-08 |
COSATU Western Cape PRESS RELEASE
23rd APRIL 2008
THE SALE OF SOMERSET LAND
COSATU is concerned that the debate on the use of the Somerset hospital land is becoming a battle of which of the BEE interest groups must be accommodated in the sale of the land. COSATU wants to place on record that there should be no closure of any public facilities until a comprehensive agreed to plan has been developed to role out good quality healthcare to all our people, and it is agreed that surplus land can be sold.
The land should the be used to ensure integrated development in the W Cape and as such should go to poor and low cost housing. The crown jewels of our country may have been promised to a Dubai based group but COSATU will oppose that or any other attempts to further feather elitist interest. This public land must be used in the public interest of the poor and here housing should be a priority.
