Zimbabwe situation update 16-04-08 |
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions
Media statement
It is now two weeks after the Zimbabwean election and no results have been forthcoming with ZANU PF calling for a recount of 23
Parliamentary constituency votes and also the Presidential votes.
The opposition has been seeking recourse in the courts but all these processes have not brought any positive results mainly because there are no provisions in the Electoral law for such situations. The opposition has called for a stayway to force the Zimbabwe Electorals Commission to release the Presidential election results.
A cloud of uncertainty hangs over Zimbabwe with reports saying the military have taken over. Robert Mugabe has kept mum over the whole
situation that we find ourselves in and only former Ministers in his dissolved Cabinet are making statements on behalf of 'government'.
Tensions are rising bit by bit as Zimbabweans wait for election results. Violence has already erupted in some parts of the country with opposition supporters being brutalized for supporting the MDC. The ZCTU is of the view that Thabo Mbeki is no longer a suitable person to mediate in the Zimbabwean crisis. We would prefer a situation where a retired African president takes up the role to persuade Mugabe to step down.

Khumbulani
