Labour Job Creation Trust

The General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Zwelinzima Vavi, wrote the following letter to the trustees of the Labour Job Creation Trust on 9 April 2008:

Re: Removal of the William Madisha as President of COSATU and chairperson of the Labour Job Creation Trust

As you are aware, the COSATU CEC held on the 25 - 27 February 2008 unanimously decided to remove William Madisha as the President of COSATU. You are also aware that he served in the Board of the Labour Job Creation Trust through a COSATU CEC nomination and by virtue of him being the COSATU President.

It is only logical now that he is no longer the President of COSATU he can no longer act on behalf of the Federation in any capacity including being the chairperson of the Board of the Labour Job Creation Trust. He no longer enjoys the trust, mandate or confidence of the Federation.

We were informed by the COSATU nominated trustees that William Madisha chaired the last meeting of the Labour Job Creation Trust in defiance of the letter we sent to him advising that he can no longer chair the Board of the Labour Job Creation Trust or act on behalf of the Federation in any way.

It has been brought to our attention that he will be officiating at some Labour Job Creation Trust function on Saturday to which the media has been invited. If this happens, this will be in defiance of the wishes of the COSATU family of unions.

We are convening a meeting of the COSATU appointed trustees to the board on 6 May 2008. At this meeting the COSATU trustees will discuss this matter and make a proposal on who should replace the former COSATU President as well as other trustees that were nominated by COSATU who no longer active in the trust.

Yours sincerely

Zwelinzima Vavi
