COSATU North West Press Statement on the Provincial Shop Stewards Council to be held on 12th April 2008
The Congress of South African Trade Unions will be holding its North West Provincial Shop Stewards Council on 12th April 2008 at Vaal Reefs Technical High School from 10H00 to 16H00.
It will be focusing on the following issues:
Ø Finalising the programme for the May Day mobilisation, which will be hosted in North West Province on 1st May 2008 (Workers' Day)
Ø The council will also deal with challenges facing the poor working class, e.g. jobs and poverty, in particular outlining the programme to deal with the high tariff increase for electricity, food pricing increases, retrenchment of workers, privatisation of water, challenges facing the farm workers, e.g. racism, evictions, and poor service delivery by some municipalities in the province.
COSATU North West is calling all the people of North West province to support its jobs and poverty campaign programmes, which will target farmers, employers, municipalities, mining, construction, manufacturing and shops such as Shoprite, Pick n Pay and many other companies that are exploiting workers.
Our council will be addressed by COSATU 2nd Deputy President, Violet Seboni
The Media is invited to the council on the 12th April 2008 at Vaal Reefs Technical High School, Orkney.
We are also calling all COSATU members, shop stewards, the alliance, churches and civil society to support the demonstrations on 14th April 2008 at Swartruggens court where Johal Nel will be appearing for the 5th time with no progress. COSATU calls for the Department of Justice to stop playing tricks. Johan Nel is not mad, not sick; he knew very well that what he was doing was a plan to kill our communities at Skierluk. Therefore we demand that the matter be referred to the high court with immediate effect.
