Jackie Selebi warrant

The Central Executive Committee of the Congress of South African Trade Unions on 4 October 2007 expressed extreme concern at reports in the media quoting sources in high places that suggested that the real reason for the suspension of Advocate Vusi Pikoli related to the issuing of a warrant against SAPS Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

This morning's statement issued after the meeting said that "if these allegations are true then we face a major constitutional crisis in the country and that this would be a vindication of what we have always believed".

Now that it has been officially confirmed that indeed a warrant for Selebi was obtained on 14th September from the Witwatersrand Deputy-Judge President, our worst fears have been confirmed and COSATU believes we have a serious crisis.

COSATU's 9th National Congress in September 2006 resolved "to call for a review of the activities and role of the NPA and other state agencies". This has now become more urgent than ever and we demand that the inquiry into the suspension of Vusi Pikoli look at the broader political questions concerning the role of the NPA, the Scorpions and other state agencies, to check that they are acting within the constitution and subject to proper democratic accountability.
