COSATU repudiates Mail & Guardian front page sensationalism

COSATU wishes to place on record that today's Mail and Guardian front page headline reading: "We will take over the ANC" is neither a quote, nor a statement made by the COSATU General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.

Anyone reading the interview on page 4 of today's edition of the paper will soon realise that headline is merely a crude attempt by the editors to sell more copies of the newspaper by falsely sensationalising the discussion.

It is however true that COSATU strongly seeks to reclaim the ANC as the movement of working class that it is and should be.

This is not the same as "taking over" as claimed by the front-page headlines.

We seek to ensure that the working class plays a leading role in the ANC.

We seek to change the current situation where in the leading structures of the ANC there is hardly a person representing the voice of the working class, even though the working class is the core constituency of the ANC.

Signed:

Zwelinzima Vavi

COSATU General Secretary
